Hindagala Raja Maha Viharaya

The Hindagala Raja Maha Viharaya is located three kilometres away from the Galaha Junction on Deltota Road via Kandy - Galaha Road. The viharaya is a serene place at a higher elevation, surrounded by hills. It was once a hermitage, where Buddhist monks meditated hundreds of years ago.
Two paths are found to reach to the temple as in a rather steep road and a flight of steps from near ambalama or the resting place at Villege Hindagala. It is a cave temple located under a boulder and built during the late Senkadagala period. It houses a large reclining statue of the Buddha and a dagoba. On the walls of the exterior, interior and the cave-roof are painted in the18th century and some were painted in the 20th century.
In addition, a few poorly preserved traces of paint, probably dating from the 5th century indicate that the temple was already in use during the classical Sinhalese period. These are among the earliest paintings in this island. Hindagala temple is a very significant place in Sri Lanka since the Hindagala Temple is related to many of ancient legends and amazing wall paintings. The architecture of the Hindagala Temple is also amazing. The Viharageya is totally built under a natural large rock.
