A distinctive geographic location, this mountain range is found within the Alagalla Ihala Grama Niladhari Division, towards the southwest of the Thumpane Divisional Secretariat in Galagedara Electorate of the Kandy District. Situated between the Kandy and Matale Districts, the extent of the mountain range covers the entire Thumpane Divisional Secretariat, Rambukkana, Yatinuwara and Mawanella areas.

Although situated only 40 kilometers away from Kandy town, the Alagalla Nature Reserve is a region with different climatic and environmental conditions. Its rich biodiversity is a major attraction to tourists.
With an elevation of 3,332 feet above sea level, Alagalla Mountain is the fourth highest in Sri Lanka. The summit of the mountain is a plateau with an extent of many acres. This is one of the best vantage points to see and enjoy the exquisite beauty of Sri Lanka’s forest areas. Seen from the mountaintop, whole mountain ranges fill the wilderness. The Mawanella area, Colombo-Kandy railway track, and the Balana Pass are clearly visible from here.
